📓DESIGNED FOR THE LEARNER WHO:
•	Reads a book and cannot wait to chat about it with others.
•	Wants to grow as a writer.
•	Is excited about setting goals for themselves as a reader and as a writer.
📓ALSO FOR THE LEARNER WHO:
•	Feels as if there are no books that could ever interest them.
•	Has a general disdain for the writing process.
•	Does not see how reading or writing can relate to their future.
📓EXAMPLES OF TOPICS COVERED (The following will be covered at some point during these classes; however, this is NOT an exhaustive listing of the topics we will cover.)
•	Understanding and practicing sentence structure
•	Developing paragraphs in writing
•	Exploring the themes in novels
•	Using facets and characteristics of fiction to write non-fiction
•	Understanding characterization in novels

(Please note that, in a reading-writing workshop classroom, many of the topics are determined by the learners, either by choice or by need observed by the teacher. For example, if all learners in a particular section have a strong understanding of plot structure, the teacher will not spend the entire 45 minutes working with the class on this concept. On the other hand, if two students out of nine are consistently using commas incorrectly, the teacher will provide time, space, and materials within the Zoom classroom or outside of our scheduled class to work with those two learners on that concept.)

𝗖𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗺 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗚𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀:
1) While my goal is to hold classes to the scheduled 45 minutes, occasionally classes with low enrollments (or those with especially loquacious learners 🤩) may go over or under a few minutes.

2) Classes will begin and end at the scheduled times, even if learners are late to the classroom or absent.
If no learners are in the classroom, I will wait 10 minutes before exiting the classroom. As stated in Outschool’s policy, “If your learners have not joined the meeting 10 minutes after the start time, the meeting may be canceled, at the teacher’s discretion. This is considered a missed meeting and you are not entitled to a refund.”

3) To ensure safety and security, ALL of my learners are required to turn their cameras on at the beginning of class in order to confirm identity. Speaking is an objective in a full English language arts curriculum, so a working microphone is required also helping to ensure learner security and safety.

3) All learners will be muted upon entering the classroom to prevent background noise and distractions. Please familiarize your child with the “Mute” and “Unmute” button in Zoom. (Parents are not required to be present during class, but it is helpful to be nearby in case your child has IT issues.)

4) I follow all Outschool refund policies. Please familiarize yourself with them here: https://support.outschool.com/en/articles/16379-refund-policies-and-happiness-guarantee

5) For multiple learners from your household, Outschool’s policy states, “Parents are welcome to enroll two or more learners in the same section of a class provided that the class has enough spaces. You will need to enroll each learner separately for the section, but learners are welcome to share a device if that would make it easier to attend class.”
Teaching in public schools for 31 years afforded me with professional development opportunities in which I could grow in my understanding of the pedagogy of English language arts. Over the many years, I attended:

📓 a three-week course to build student leadership within the classroom;
📓 a three-week intensive training on teaching writing during which I became certified to train other educators;
📓 numerous state and national conventions at which I learned from the leaders in the industry, such as Penny Kittle, Donalyn Miller, and the late Dr. Terri Lesesne. As my confidence in teaching ELA grew, I, too, presented my own unique methods to teach English language arts at many state and national conventions. Each time I presented, I shared a bit of the story of my own reading and writing life as a child and young adult as it is crucial we remember that we were once young readers and writers.
📓…and so many other opportunities throughout the years!

While all of this training and expertise is important to share, my ability to connect with the student as a young reader and writer is my superpower. All of the professional development in the world cannot teach that sense of connection, and I am fortunate to be able to have hundreds of students who continue to attest to this. Some reach out by text and social media to remind me of the first book they ever read from start to finish...in my 8th grade classroom. Others were avid readers before they entered my class, and they reach out as adults to share the latest book they've read insisting I read it right away. Still others write to thank me that writing landed them a dream job simply because they learned the power of words.

It's exciting to continue making those reading and writing connections with Outschool students. I look forward to enjoy the magic of books and writing with your student.

Parents are encouraged to help their learners select reading material. In this manner, the values and the expectations of each individual family is respected. Nevertheless, please remember that this class is built on voice and choice with ALL learners. Therefore, there is always the possibility that another learner's chosen novel may contain material you or your learner find objectionable. In such situations, the student must communicate with the teacher and may take a break from class as the other student discusses their book.
