During this course, students will learn the basics of music theory and performance. Beginning students will focus on note reading and moving on the staff, along with dynamics and articulation. Intermediate students will strengthen their note reading and intervallic reading, along with introducing chords and lead sheets. More advanced students will be able to strengthen their theory knowledge and become more independent with self-assessment when playing. All students have the ability to choose music and give input as to what kind of music they would like to play. I love to teach students what they are interested in as I have found that they are more motivated this way!

No musical experience or knowledge is required to begin private piano lessons, however a student may prefer to enroll in a one-time lesson to ensure that my teaching style is a good fit. I am very flexible and I want to make sure that each student is comfortable with the format and style of the lesson! 

Along with two 30-minute lessons each week, I also ask that students practice a minimum of one hour outside of class time. Most students will progress more quickly if they devote 20-30 minutes per day to practicing. During class time I will be teaching students how to practice the piano if needed, this is a learned skill.

Lessons will include:
- warmup activity (sight reading, technique, etc)

- play songs that were assigned the previous week (depending on age and ability, some weeks a student may practice only 1 song. Other weeks I may ask them to practice more than one. I am always receptive however to parents' advice regarding the number of songs they would like to pratice weekly).

- discuss how to improve their practiced songs (add dynamics, review rhythm, add articulation, change tempo, etc)

- if applicable, choose a new song to practice. Try to play parts of the song before the lesson is over, discuss any new theory concepts covered in the song.

- if time permits, do a fun activity! Play a rhythm game, learn new chords, improvise a melody, strengthen note reading, "Name that Tune", etc.
