There are many types of poems. I am going to introduce to the learners four types - haikus, limericks, acrostics, and alliteration poems. 

Day One - the haiku poem. This is a Japanese poem that is fun to create. We will have a discussion about them and learn some history and geography. I will show some examples of old style haikus, and then some fun haikus other students have created. The learners will then create their own.

Day Two - the alliteration poem. This is a poem that repeats a speech sound, usually consonants, in a word sequence.  I will show them examples and then they will write one of their own. Children enjoy writing this type of poem. 

Day Three - the acrostic poem. I will share some history of this type of poem. There are several variations, but we will focus on creating a secret code acrostic. The learners will then have the knowledge to send secret code messages to their friends! 

Day Four - the limerick poem. After sharing some history and geography of limericks, I will show the learners examples of funny limericks and teach the special rhythm that these poems need to have. They will then create one of their own. 

All of these classes are comfortable and safe. I always love to answer any questions to help the learners. They will be free to share their ideas with everyone as we create. I want them to have fun, but I want them to use their manners so everyone can speak. No prior experience with poems needed with this class.
