 Week 1
Lesson 1
Introduction to Affixes
Learners will be introduced to the components of words (morphemes, graphemes, etc), and begin to recognize the familiar morphemes (-ed, -ing, and -s/es)
Lesson 2
Introduction to Affixes (continued)
Learners will continue to explore suffixes -ed, -ing, and -s/es. Learners will explore the various sounds of the suffix -ed and be exposed to "Double, Drop, Change" rules for adding vowel suffixes
Lesson 3
Grammar and Writing: Nouns and Ending Punctuation
Learners will discuss nouns and ending punctuation, using an exercise called "Blah, Blah, Blah" to practice creating meaning when reading.
 Week 2
Lesson 4
Suffix -able, -ible
Learners will be introduced to the suffix -able (alternative spelling -ible)
Lesson 5
Context clues
Learners will be introduced to context clues: words or phrases that give readers clues or ideas to the meaning of words. They will use a 4-part method for deducing the meaning of words using context clues.
Lesson 6
Grammar and Writing: Capitalizing Nouns
This lesson includes a discussion of capitalization of proper nouns.
 Week 3
Lesson 7
Suffix -ful, -less
Learners will begin to dive into the 3-part drill: a tool used to practice previously-learned morphemes. Learners will understand how spelling changes differ with consonant suffixes.
Lesson 8
Context Clues, Continued
Leaners will explore various types of context clues: definition, appositives, synonyms, antonyms, and examples
Lesson 9
Grammar and Writing: Pronouns and Commas
Learners will understand the use of pronouns in English as a replacement for nouns and practice the use of commas.
 Week 4
Lesson 10
Prefixes un-, in-, dis-
Learners will be introduced to three common prefixes (un, in, dis) and explore the idea of an assimilated (chameleon) prefix. Learners will continue to practice the 3-part drill.
Lesson 11
Emphasizing Words, Shades of Meaning
Learners will discuss how emphasizing words in a sentence can change the meaning of the words, and also explore how words can be thought of on a spectrum to add interest to writing.
Lesson 12
Grammar and Writing: Adjectives and Commas in Lists
Learners will use a brain map of the five sentences to explore adjectives and explore the use of commas in lists.
 Week 5
Lesson 13
Introduction to Latin: Bases "rupt" and "form"
Learners will begin to explore about the influence of the Latin language into English. Learners will explore the bases "rupt" and "form."
Lesson 14
Vocabulary: Using Morphemes
Learners will explore how morphemes can help us understand unfamiliar vocabulary words--and how sometimes this may lead us astray.
Lesson 15
Grammar and Writing: Verbs and Apostrophes
Learners will explore three types of verbs: action, linking, and helping. Learners will learn to use apostrophes to show possession.

Latin Bases: "Port" and "Struct"
Learners will explore Latin bases "port" and "struct"
Lesson 17
Homophones and Fluency
Leaners will explore common homophones.
Lesson 18
Grammar and Writing: Verb Tenses and Apostrophes for Contractions
Learners will explore simple past/present/future tense verbs and use apostrophes for common contractions.
 Week 7
Lesson 19
Latin Bases "Dic(t)" and "Cred"
Learners will explore the new Latin bases dict and cred.
Lesson 20
Fluency: Reader's Theater
Learners will practice fluency with a fun "Reader's Theater."
Lesson 21
Grammar and Writing: Adverbs and Similes
Learners will explore the use of adverbs to modify adverbs and the use of similes as a form of figurative language.
 Week 8
Lesson 22
Latin Base "aud" and "vis/vid"
Learners will explore the new Latin bases "aud" and "vis/vid."
Lesson 23
Idioms
Learners will explore and create a visual representation of popular English idioms
Lesson 24
Grammar and Writing: Prepositions
Learners will discuss prepositions and practice identifying them with a game.
 Week 9
Lesson 25
Greek Bases "photo," "graph/gram," "phon," and "tele"
Learners will get an introduction to Greek's influence in the English language, as well as an understanding in basic differences between words with Latin and Greek etymology. Learners will begin exploring the Greek bases "photo," "graph/gram," "phon," and "tele."
Lesson 26
Word Maps
Learners will continue to build on their understanding of Greek bases, begin to identify the etymology of common words, and use word maps to practice improving understanding of vocabulary words.
Lesson 27
Grammar and Writing: Conjunctions and Hyperbole
Learners will explore the use of conjunctions to connect clauses or sentences and also explore the use of hyperbole in writing.
 Week 10
Lesson 28
Greek Bases: bio, (o)logy, hydr(o), phobia
Learners will continue an exploration of Greek bases with four additional Greek bases.
Lesson 29
Vocabulary: Taboo
Learners will practice defining words without the use of those words and/or parts of those words through the use of the game "Taboo."
Lesson 30
Grammar and Writing: Interjections and Run-on Sentences
Learners will explore the use of interjections in writing and speech and practice identifying and correcting run-on sentences.
 Week 11
Lesson 31
Put it Together: Explore the word "Interjection"
Learners will explore the prefix "inter-," the Latin base "ject" and the suffix "ion" as word-forming elements.
Lesson 32
Combining Latin Bases
Learners will discover new words with learned Latin bases.
Lesson 33
Grammar and Writing: Subject and Predicate
Learners will explore the idea of subject and predicate in sentences and practice identifying them.
 Week 12
Lesson 34
Suffix "er/or" and "est"
Learners will be introduced to the suffix "er" (alternate spelling -or) and suffix -est. Learners will wrap up understanding of Double, Drop, Change rules"photo," "graph/gram," "phon," and "tele".
Lesson 35
Explore "er/or"
Learners will continue to explore the suffix -er/or and practice identifying which meaning the suffix represents in words.
Lesson 36
Grammar and Writing: Denotation/Connotation and Parts of Speech
Learners will celebrate their semester of learning with a Mad Libs review and practice distinguishing a word's denotation and connotation.
  • Students will improve their understanding of the English language, its history and structure, its grammar and usage rules, and spelling and writing conventions.
I am a certified elementary teacher with years of experience in preschool and second grade. I have also taught ESL for 3 years on-line, and hold an MA in Teaching from Dominican University. I am trained in the Orton-Gillingham approach through IMSE (30-hour morphology plus course).

Occasional homework will be assigned. This might include completion of a worksheet, practice with a game, or review of affix/root flash cards (made by students during class). **PLEASE NOTE: Younger learners may need help with the organization of our interactive notebook. Please contact me at any time for instructions to make the notebook something that can be useful for learners during and after our course.***

Progress reports are available upon request. Learners are informally assessed each day 1 and 2 on their knowledge of and ability to spell previously-learned morphemes.

All learners should use a 1-inch 3-ring binder with dividers (5 or more is fine). Print-outs will be provided each week and these should be added to the notebook for student reference (having a 3-hole punch can be very helpful). All learners should bring a whiteboard and marker, as well as a pencil, to each class.

In addition, learners should have a set of notecards that are 4x6 inches and come in 5 colors: yellow, blue, lavender, pink, and green. Links from various sellers included below for your convenience.

A second device is preferable on days with Kahoot practice (I will send clear information/instructions if/when we use Kahoot). Youtube videos by Arika Okrent may be shared via screenshare as well.
