Oral reading fluency is a skill that is imperative for a child to be successful as a reader!  Between second and third grade, students are expected to transition from the "learning to read" stage of reading into the "reading to learn" stage.  Oral reading fluency often holds students back in regards to their reading comprehension, and this is a skill that I am passionate about developing!

In this ongoing course, students will spend 9 weeks creating their very own fluency binder.  We'll meet daily to practice fluency skills and to review the content that we add to our binders each week.  This will enable your child to build confidence and independence in using these tools on their own, and give you resources to practice oral reading fluency at home.  We will use research based strategies that include using fluency phrases, timed reading passages, seasonal songs, poems, and sight words.  These strategies are taught using lots of positive reinforcement, enthusiasm, and energy!  

Each class will be structured in the following format:
-3 minutes: Welcome/Engagement Question
-3 minutes: Fluency Phrases - We'll practice reading these phrases in funny voices, with expression, and using a variety of tones.  This will help your child become a more expressive reader!
-3 minutes: Timed Passages - Your child will be given 1 passage a week.  During this segment of our class, students will read their passage independently (to themselves) for 1 minute.  They'll mark their progress each day on the passage, and they'll see themselves reading further each day.  This will increase fluency, speed, and hopefully motivate your child to set goals and reach them, while preparing them for reading assessments at school.
-3 minutes: Poems - Students will be given multiple poems a week.  Poems will usually be thematic/seasonal, and students will love reading them and finding their sight words within each poem.  We'll practice reading poems in a variety of voices and speeds, and use them as a way to increase fluency and expression.
-3 minutes: Songs - Sometimes songs will be used along with poems each week! These will also be seasonal, funny, entertaining, and help engage your child in improving their reading fluency!
-3 minutes: Sight Words - Each week your child will get a new list of sight words to practice.  We'll practice chanting them with fun movements, writing them, and reading them each week.  Sight word recognition is crucial to developing strong oral reading fluency!
-2 minutes:  Conclusions, celebrations, and conversations

At the end of the 9 week session, you'll have the option of beginning another 9 week session, and continue adding new resources and strategies as we continue our learning together.  

In order to be most successful in this class, students should be in second or third grades, and struggling readers are welcome!
