What type of Opera is this? Who is The Gingerbread Witch? Why do I recognize the names, Hansel and Gretel? In this class, we will be taking a field trip to the opera house and learn about a famous opera through music, dance, and song. The class will begin with introductions to get to know our current and new learners. During this class, students will learn about the famous opera Hansel and Gretel as well as how to sing and dance to the chorus of the famous Brother, Come and Dance with Me song. We will discuss the story of Hansel and Gretel, what type of Opera Hansel and Gretel is, who the composer and librettist are, who the main characters in Hansel and Gretel are as well as their voice types.  We will learn that Hansel and Gretel is set in Germany, identify Germany on a world map, discuss the language and culture of Germany as well as the German musical influences in the Opera! In the musical and movement portion of the class, we will learn an excerpt from the famous chorus Brother, Come and Dance with Me, as well as fun dance moves to help us remember the lyrics.  I will guide students through the lesson about the opera Hansel and Gretel with an exciting lecture, encourage questions and discussions, teach an active vocal warmup, and lead the students to sing the famous Brother, Come and Dance with Me chorus. I encourage my students to raise their hand to signal that they have a question or want to share something with me or the class. I want to make sure every student gets a chance to be heard and share their thoughts while still maintaining a structured and friendly classroom environment.
