New-to-knitting learners watch a step-by-step demonstration of one technique at a time; then are guided through the technique, with ample opportunities to ask questions and receive individual assistance. No prior experience is necessary, however hand and finger dexterity are helpful. Learners develop knitting skills, an understanding of the knitting process, and experience the confidence and satisfaction of crafting their first-ever knitted square.
I'm an avid knitter, and I love teaching young people to knit! I have taught an after-school knitting club for teens, and I've taught children as young as six years to knit, as an integral part of the Waldorf curriculum.
EACH LEARNER WILL NEED:
- 1 pair knitting needles--short, thick needles are easiest to use. (NO crochet hooks, as these are for a different purpose)
- I recommend U.S. size 10 (6mm) knitting needles.
- A skein or ball of thick yarn--knit stitches in light or bright colors are easiest to see.
- I recommend yarn in a ‘bulky’ thickness
- 100% pure wool is easy to work with, due to its elasticity.
- Wool blends or other fibers are also suitable.
- Scissors for snipping the yarn end after binding off
Please message the teacher if you have any questions about materials.Grownups are asked to caution learners against using pointed tools--knitting needles and scissors--as playthings. Younger and impulsive children may require adult supervision while using these tools.
