The research is clear: taking notes by hand increases conceptual understanding. By writing, learners are forced to be selective and concise, and to think about relationships between ideas rather than simply writing words. In my 30+ year career in science education, my number one take-away has been the value of keeping paper notebooks. In "My Science Notebook: A Collection of Curiosities," an ongoing class, we will explore a science question or concept each week via the 5 E Learning Cycle...

I've been studying science all my life, being raised in a science-rich household and pursuing science in college. I taught middle school science for 21 years, then worked as the middle school science education specialist for the State Department of Education in Alabama for 6 years. In retirement, I am still actively involved in many scientific communities, and stay engaged with groups such as the North American Association for Environmental Education and the National Science Teachers Association. I am passionate and knowledgeable about the study of science, and about passing on this passion to youngsters.
