Music making aids in young children’s development and helps foster a sense of well-being. In this one-time class, learners will join the teacher exploring music through through singing, dancing and playing. All of the music we will sing or listen to for this class will be in English. Learners should be in a space that is safe to move around as in a dance. Prior knowledge of music making is not necessary in this low-stress environment. I have a BA in music education and an MA in curriculum and instruction. I have been a teacher for more than 22 years in public schools, private schools, homeschool, a music museum, and online. I have been certified for and have taught all ages from early childhood all the way to high school and have loved each level equally.
Instruments are not required, but if there are some available, they may be used. If the learner would like to substitute items around the house that could be used in place of an instrument, that would be wonderful! Suggested instruments/props include: - small hand drum (bowl/pot turned upside down) - 2 rhythm sticks (2 unsharpened pencils/2 short dowels/2 sticks from outside) - scarf (something smaller and lightweight like a kitchen towel or facial tissue) - maraca (something small that makes a shaking sound that can be held in one hand and won't get broken if dropped) - feather (something small and extremely lightweight like a small scrap of paper/puffball) - tambourine
Students will have the opportunity to share in class. It may be necessary to have an adult near by to help them navigate the mute/unmute button.
