Your student will love this class- I've taught it for years and gifted kids love learning about ancient Egyptians!  This course is challenging, as it is designed for high ability learners who typically perform beyond grade-level expectations.

In this class, we will learn about ancient Egyptian culture, which may include the following topics (time providing):

session 1: mummification (begin mummifying a chicken!) where we learn about the mummification process through slideshow and game simulation, then mummify our own chickens!
session 2: mummification continued & geography- we will continue the mummification process with our chickens (hold your nose!) then learn about the geography of the Nile in a slideshow of maps and video.
session 3: farming & other occupations (caste system)- try your luck and see which career you'll be born into!  Learn through slideshow and video about the various careers in ancient Egypt.
sessions 4& 5: ancient games played by Egyptian children!  Learn about the ancient version of tug-o-war, tic-tac-toe, and an ancient version of checkers.  We will make and play ancient games!
session 6: hieroglyphics- learn what they are, write your name, read other messages, and do some ancient Egyptian math!
session 7: pyramids & sphinx- We will learn about the purpose of pyramids, some famous ones (Giza!), and learn about the Great Sphinx.  We will view some aerial photos and take a virtual tour inside a pyramid!
session 8: Draw like an ancient Egyptian & Dissecting the Curse of the Mummy.  Finish up with our chicken mummies!

I believe in flexibility, and allowing student interest and questioning to guide the course.  Therefore, this is an estimation of how time will be spent:

5 minutes: share time- everyone deserves a turn to be heard!
10 minutes: preparing mummy (salt is changed each week and chicken is observed)
15 minutes: lesson & discussion
15 minutes: hands-on activities
5 minutes: wrap-up and homework

Students will need a few easily- attainable and affordable supplies for this class, so please make sure you procure them before the first class!

It is very important to me that students have an opportunity to feel a sense of belonging and community.  My primary goal in offering this course is to allow your student to learn something while getting to interact with true peers.  While the course will encourage critical thinking, evaluating with a set of given criteria, note-taking, brainstorming, and other curricular skills, I am most interested in encouraging socialization and a joy of learning among high ability learners.  

I will always stay an extra 5-10 minutes to help a struggling student when it is needed!  I am also very comfortable working with twice-exceptional children, but please let me know in advance how I can best assist to minimize frustration and maximize learning!
