수업 소개
This fun filled on-going class is meant to help readers enjoy reading new books and making new friends. My intent with this book club is to help readers make connections with new books while practicing reading strategies and different text features. Through this book club we will read inspiring and adventurous books while working on reading comprehension skills, hold conversations with peers, and create a love for reading. Students will be responsible for reading the book of the week before class starts. There will be a weekly schedule for students to follow. In each class students will have the opportunity to ask questions they had about the book, give a rating and review, and share a favorite quote from the book. Example class structure: - Introductions - 0-5 star reviews, discussions, and recommendations - Favorite quote from the book - Text structure practice - Comprehension questions Kahoot quiz - Introduction and prediction of upcoming book Before coming to class students need to have read the book, identified a favorite quote from the book, have a rating in mind for the book, and have any questions they would like to ask during class. These are the books used for the first 10 weeks of class June 14th - The Westing Game, by Ellen Raskin 21st - The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett, 28th - Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor. July 5th - Black Beauty by Anna Sewell. 12th - The Magician's Nephew by C.S. Lewis. 19th - The Voyage of the Dawn Treader by C.S. Lewis. 26th - Hatchet August 2nd - The Golden Fleece 9th - The Dream Keeper 16th - The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe More books and dates will be added as we read through this first set of books. I hope your student is excited to read some of the best books of all time and make new friends!

Students will improve their reading comprehension skills, discover new reading strategies and techniques, and broaden their reading pallet. In this class student will be able to create questions, form an opinion with evidence to support, and practice comprehension and text feature skills.

There will be times where characters in these books will run into racism, prejudice, and mild violence. When handling these situations, I explain the situation, why characters are portraying these negative thoughts or actions, note that these are not desired behaviors for people, and explain why the author has used them in the book. I do not go any farther in my opinions or allow others to voice their opinion or thoughts about the situation. I do this to have control of the conversation since these are such sensitive topics.

I have teaching experience in a middle school reading position where I would hold novel studies on different books. I know the importance of keeping opinions on high risk topics out of the conversation. These sensitive and high-risk topics should be explained with facts and no bias. Students should be informed of the topics when they are brought up in class but the conversation should never lead to conversations of opinions between students during class. 리뷰
