수업 경험

미국 등급 4 - 7
Beginner 레벨
8 lessons//8 Weeks
 Week 1
Lesson 1
Creating a Block
Students learn the basics of creating textures in MCreator to create a design for a new block in Minecraft. They also learn how to customize the behavior of the block to make it different from other blocks in Minecraft.
 Week 2
Lesson 2
Creating Procedures
Students are introduced to coding procedures in MCreator and how to make a block perform an action on a specific event in Minecraft. For example, students learn how to code a block to release an entity (mob) when a player mines their block.
 Week 3
Lesson 3
Creating a Tool
Students learn how to create their own tool/weapon in Minecraft and code it to make something happen at a specific XYZ coordinate position. This requires students to use raycasting in their code to capture where the player is looking/targeting. Students also learn how to use computational thinking to problem solve and brainstorm solutions to a challenging coding problem.
 Week 4
Lesson 4
Special Combinations
Students learn to create a special combination that allows a player to get instant potions when they swing their tool at a specific block. Students learn how to use logic to compare the block their player is looking at to see if it’s the correct block to receive the potions. Prior to starting the lesson, students also practice computational thinking with the instructor to problems solve how to create this special combination.
 Week 5
Lesson 5
Ores and Recipes
Students learn how to create their own custom ore in Minecraft and determine whether it is a common or rare ore. They then learn how to create custom recipes that allow them to smelt their ore to get an ingot and use the ingot in a crafting recipe to get their tool from previous classes. Basically, students are able to go all the way from their ore to their tool in Survival mode. Additionally, students learn how to create a random chance function in the code.
 Week 6
Lesson 6
Building a Mob in Blockbench
Students learn to use a 3D modeling program called Blockbench to build a new mob for Minecraft. First, they learn how to use 3D shapes to build their model. Afterwards, students learn how to add textures to their model.
 Week 7
Lesson 7
Mob Animation and Behavior
Students learn how to position pivot points in Blockbench so their mob can have moving appendages (arms and legs) in Minecraft. They also work on importing their Mob into MCreator and learning how to change its behavior and AI settings. Finally, students are able to see their Mob alive in Minecraft.
 Week 8
Lesson 8
Mob Attacks
Students learn how to use logic and variables to give their mob different attacks. When the mob gets attacked, it generates a random number between 1 and 3 in a variable. Logic is then used to set up an attack for each possible number. Students are then challenged to add some of their own attacks for their mob.
In this class, students will learn to…
-Use a drag and drop programming language called Blockly. Blockly is a great way to set students up for more advanced programming.
-Organize commands and directions into functions.
-Give special abilities to weapons in Minecraft.
-Create new items in Minecraft (blocks, tools, NPCs).
-Customize AI of NPCs (Mobs) they create.
-Create their own textures to give a custom look to new items.
-Create amazing Mods using programming loops, logic (IF/THEN), and more!
-Define variables in coding and use them in code.
-Apply computational thinking to solve coding challenges.
I have been teaching technology, coding, and 21st century skills for nearly 15 years. I am a certified elementary teacher in PA and have a Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction. I also have run my own educational technology business in the past. My goal is to help kids learn the skills they need in today's world, but also help them believe they can be the creators of new technology instead of simply consuming it.

Informal Assessment: At least 2-3 times during the class, students get a chance to share the mod they are creating with the class. During the share, the teacher highlights creative aspects of their mod and makes suggestions when appropriate. The goal of this is really to highlight students' creativity and point out that everyone has the ability to produce unique and creative content.

Minecraft
A Minecraft (PC/MAC-Java Edition) is required for this program. See below.
-Minecraft-- https://www.minecraft.net/en-us/store/minecraft-java-edition/
-Other editions of Minecraft (like Windows 10 and Pocket Edition) will not work with the class.
-You must have a PC or Mac to run this edition of Minecraft. It will not work on a ChromeBook or tablet.
-Note For Mac Users: The Minecraft website only lists Java Edition for PC. This is a result of Mojang bundling Java Edition and Bedrock Edition together. Bedrock edition does not work on the Mac, but you can still purchase Minecraft and Java edition will work on your Mac. We don't need Bedrock edition for class.

MCreator
Important Note: MCreator is a free open source program and is partly supported by ads on its website. MCreator should be downloaded and installed under parent supervision to avoid clicking on ads on the website. Please follow the directions you receive after registration that will guide you through download and install. There are no ads inside the software after it is downloaded and installed. Don’t hesitate to reach out for help and support in doing this.

Blockbench
Students use a free program called Blockbench (a 3D model editor) to create a custom texture for an NPC (Mob). https://www.blockbench.net/
