In this 15-week class that covers one semester, students will meet once a week and will also be expected to complete homework at home. This class will focus on aspects of Life Science including cells, the characteristics of living things, plants, animals, habitats, and ecology. Paper and pencil will need to be available for each class. After the first week, each class will begin with any questions the students have about the homework or material covered the week before. Then the new...
15 lessons//15 Weeks
Week 1Lesson 1Characteristics of LifeThis week, students will learn how scientists determine if an organism is alive. -Homework this week will be an experiment at home growing mold on bread.Week 2Lesson 2CellsThis week we explore different types of cells and the organelles they include. -Homework this week includes looking at microscopic pictures of cells (no microscope needed) and drawing cells.Week 3Lesson 3The cell and its environmentStudents will learn about osmosis and diffusion (ways things move about cells) this week.Week 4Lesson 4DNAThis week we look into the blueprint of cells, DNA. -Homework this week will be a worksheet on coding and DNA sequencing.Week 5Lesson 5VirusesThe week begins a few weeks work into small living things. Today, we focus on viruses. -Homework this week will be How Many Viruses Fit on a Pin.Week 6Lesson 6BacteriaThis week, students will learn about bacteria and some diseases they cause. -Homework this week will include an experiment with yeast.Week 7Lesson 7Protists and FungiThis week we look at some single-celled organisms and how fungi grow. -Homework this week includes an at-home experiment on fungi spores.Week 8Lesson 8Plant KingdomThis week is all about plants, those with and without seeds. -Homework this week includes a close look at flowers.Week 9Lesson 9What is an Animal? This week we switch and take a look at the characteristics of animals. -This week, students will design and build an animal habitat.Week 10Lesson 10InsectsThis week starts our foray into a few different animal families. Today, we talk insects. -Homework this week includes a look into living soil.Week 11Lesson 11BirdsThis week, we focus on birds and their characteristics. -Homework this week will be a seed activity.Week 12Lesson 12Owl PelletsThis week we dissect an owl pellet -Homework this week will be putting together any whole skeletons that come from each student's pellet.Week 13Lesson 13Living Things and the Environmenthis week starts our discussion into habitats and ecosystems. -Homework this week will be labeling a scene of all living and nonliving things.Week 14Lesson 14PopulationsThis week we look at ecology, changes in living populations, and factors that limit them. -Homework this week will be a worksheet on how weather affects crane populations.Week 15Lesson 15Semester ReviewUsing a fun gameshow and class discussion, students will review the last 14 weeks of class. Teacher feedback is sent to parents at the conclusion of the class.
- Students will be able to explore through lecture, experiments, demonstrations, homework, and discussion these topics in life science......cell science, plant and animal science, ecology.
I was a middle school science teacher for 10 years. I have also homeschooled and graduated my daughter for 10 years. As a public school teacher, I taught Earth Science, Chemistry, Physical Science, Zoology, Biology, and more to hundreds of students. Science is a passion of mine and I find performing experiments both fascinating and illuminating when learning new scientific facts! In this class, students will have ample opportunity to perform their own experiments to reiterate the information they learn in class. I have my Bachelor's degree in Biology/Pre-Med and a Master's in Healthcare Administration.
