In this one-time mermaid themed class, students will listen to an interactive read aloud of, "Pinkalicious and Aqua, the Mini-Mermaid," by Victoria Kann and create a sand dollar craft while discussing their favorite details from the story.  The teacher will dress up as a mermaid character to add whimsy and fun to the class environment.  Students are more than welcome to wear their mermaid or princess attire to class as well.  

We will begin class by introducing ourselves and establishing a positive, supportive, and warm learning environment.  With permission from HarperCollins Publishers, the teacher will read aloud the book, "Pinkalicious and Aqua, the Mini-Mermaid,” by Victoria Kann.  During the read aloud, students will be active participants as we discuss the story details together.  Students are encouraged to share their ideas and take turns listening to one another.   After the read aloud, students will create a sand dollar craft while discussing their favorite details of the book.  At the end of class, students will be encouraged to share their sand dollar craft to the class. 

In this class, students will be active learners in a positive classroom environment, participate in lively discussions and have fun while crafting together.  This class is interactive, where student questions and discussions are welcomed and encouraged.  The teacher will focus on balancing the learning goals and class pacing while encouraging student participation.     

This class is designed around the Kindergarten and First Grade Common Core Reading Standards for Literature: Describe characters, settings, and major events in a story using key details.
