This series of classes is aimed at learners who enjoy science and would like to develop their scientific research skills, building the ability to think and analyse like a real scientist. The first class will focus on scientific variables, particularly independent and dependent variables, and drawing accurate data tables (including key rules for structuring the table and how to analyse results), followed by the a class on plotting scatter graphs correctly. The final class will then take your graphs to the next level by learning about error bars and lines of best fit, along with some additional graph drawing practice. Throughout, we will focus on real-life applications and use data from example experiments. Curriculum links: working scientifically (KS3) My classes are highly interactive yet academically focused, with all learners encouraged to actively participate. This includes questions, discussions and activities. I also put significant emphasis on encouraging learners to develop genuine skills and understanding while fostering a scientific mindset, rather than just learning how to pass exams. I prepare professional slides to accompany my classes, thus ensuring each class has a clear structure with visual prompts, useful definitions and on-screen activities. Learners should have a basic understanding of scientific experiments, as may be gained from primary school science investigations. They should be confident with core mathematical skills such as addition and division, as well as some familiarity with plotting simple graphs. Most importantly, learners should have an inquisitive mind and be willing to learn.
íěľ ëŞŠí
Students will learn how to:
- Define and identify independent, dependent and control variables
- Suggest variables for example experiments
- Write scientific research questions and hypothesis using their understanding of variables
- Draw data tables correctly according to scientific convention
- Identify anomalous results
- Calculate the mean
- Define the axis and scale on scatter graphs
- Plot data on scatter graphs accurately
- Draw error bars to show the range in data
- Draw a line of best fit (trend line)

For each class, learners should come prepared with: pen, pencil, ruler, eraser, paper, calculator, graph paper (templates available to print online).
