In this course, we will be reading, discussing, and writing about Mary Shelley's masterpiece, Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus. The novel, one of the first science fiction stories, is about a young scientist dealing with the consequences of creating life. Through reading the novel, we will see how Shelley attempts to answer two extremely important questions: What does it mean to be human, and how can we be good humans? We will explore the themes of nature of humanity and monstrosity,...
- Students will read and understand the plot, characters, and themes of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. - Students will use the novel as a starting point for developing their own answers to the essential question: what does it mean to be human? - Students will develop independent opinions about the text, while also developing an understanding of various other perspectives on the text. - Students will learn to construct powerful written arguments using textual evidence, secondary sources, and their own experiences. - Students will learn to support their peers through discussion and feedback.
My qualifications include a Bachelor of Arts (majors in English and Education) and a Masters of Education.
Students will need their own copies of the novel. As the book is out of copyright, free versions are available online, but physical copies (such as the Penguin editions) will often have helpful annotations which can build readers' understanding of the text.
