Did you know that approximately 90% of English words that have two or more syllables are based on Greek or Latin roots? Or that approximately 58% of all English words are derived from Latin? If you want to increase your vocabulary, learning Latin roots can be the fastest and most efficient way to do so. A root (or base) is the basic lexical unit from which words are built. The more roots you are familiar with, the more words you will understand - even if you have never seen that word before...
Students will learn 100 Latin roots, and will have become familiar with how those roots are used to build English words.
Students will be required to take notes during class, and I strongly recommend that they do this by hand with pen or pencil, rather than by typing on a device (if they are physically capable, of course). Studies have shown that students retain more of the information that they write by hand than that which they type, and success in vocabulary is all about retention.
