In this course learners will use critical thinking skills to analyze social issue of America and to understand American civics in an in-depth study, working to consider what is and is not working in the American justice system. 

I am a human rights lawyer and law professor who has both practiced law and taught human rights law for over a decade.  I have been providing content and course to younger learners at the middle and high school level on the sensitive topics contained under the human rights umbrellas for the past four years.

homework will consist of readings, as well as the assignment of audio visual materials and questions or assignments given to support the learning in class. Project based learning is a critical component of this course, and a final project will be presented at the end of the course.

Beyond the book Just Mercy, readings and audio clips will occasionally be used and will be provided by the teacher.  These will often consist of primary source materials, such as witness testimony or Supreme Court judgements in order to allow learners to explore the themes and issues brought to light through the readings more deeply.
