수업 소개
Gaeilge 102 serves as a follow-up class to Gaeilge 101. Therefore, the teacher strongly recommends that learners enroll and complete Gaeilge 101 before enrolling in Gaeilge 102. Students will learn by observing a presentation and repeating phrases spoken by the teacher. The first five minutes of the class will consist of classroom rules and icebreakers. The rest of class will be dedicated to class content. Students will quickly recap simple phrases learned in Gaeilge 101 and learn new phrases in Irish which will focus on talking about themselves, where they live and their family. When students are not talking, they will be muted and, if they wish to speak, they will use zoom’s “raise hand’ function to ask questions. During class, students will be able to use the chat function to communicate with the teacher without interrupting others in the class.

Students will gain an understanding of the following in Irish:
• How to describe themselves, including general appearance and hair and eye color.
• How to say their age.
• How to talk about where they live.
• How to talk about their family.

The teacher will post an electronic copy of the presentation handout for learners in the classroom. The teacher strongly recommends students using a pen and paper or word processor for note-taking, which will aid with memorizing vocabulary and phrases. Although it is not mandatory to purchase reading material for the class, the teacher recommends Buntús Foclóra by Stephen Cartwright (2015).

This class represents a unique opportunity for learners to begin learning a world language that is not commonly available in schools globally. Academic studies frequently show that having fluency in multiple languages is beneficial for the development of a child’s brain. The teacher is a native Irish language speaker, or “Gaeilgeoir”, originally from the northern Irish province of Ulster. The teacher has experience voluntarily teaching or assistant teaching the language at various levels for approximately ten years whether in summer camps, six week-long or year-long classes. Currently, as a Knoxville Irish Society volunteer, the instructor also teaches Irish language online at the intermediate level to adult learners. 리뷰
