Here is the CommonSenseMedia review for The Martian: https://www.commonsensemedia.org/book-reviews/the-martian - There is a significant amount of language in the novel and I have a more classroom safe version of the novel that students are welcome to access when we begin the novel. We will have a discussion about the use of language when we begin the novel and students and parents are encouraged to reach out if they have questions or concerns!
The Martian by Andy Weir: "Six days ago astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. "Now he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. "After a dust storm forces his crew to evacuate the planet while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded on Mars's surface, with no way to signal Earth that he's alive. And even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone years before a rescue could arrive. "Chances are, though, Mark won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain old "human error" are much more likely to kill him first. "Armed with nothing but his ingenuity, his engineering skills - and gallows sense of humor that proves to be his greatest source of strength - Mark embarks on a dogged quest to stay alive. But will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him?". - Weir, Andy. The Martian. New York, Ballantine Books, 2011. Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell: "In understanding successful people, we have come to focus far too much on their intelligence and ambition and personality traits. Instead, Malcolm Gladwell argues in Outliers, we should look at the world that surrounds the successful - their culture, their family, their generation, and the idiosyncratic experiences of their upbringing. Along the way, Gladwell reveals what the Beatles and Bill Gates have in common, the reason you've never heard of the smartest man in the world, why almost no star hockey players are born in the fall, and why, when it comes to plane crashes, where the pilots are born matters as much as how well they are trained. "The lives of outliers - people whose achievements fall outside normal experience - follow a peculiar and unexpected logic, and in uncovering that logic, Gladwell presents a fascinating and provocative blueprint for making the most of human potential". - Gladwell, Malcolm. Outliers. New York, Back Bay Books/Little, Brown and Company, 2008.
