In this course, students will learn their current go-to style for managing conflict, the pros and cons of the other styles (avoidance, accommodation, competing, compromising, collaborating), strategies for managing emotions, strategies for starting difficult conversations and the difference between reacting and responding. I have successfully taught this course to several high school student groups and get great feedback on the value of the content. Students report that this class gets them thinking about themselves in a new way and teaches them to appreciate different points of view. I was a conflict avoider for most of my life, then received training as a mediator where I learned to help two people in conflict to have a conversation and resolve their issues. Through this training and practice of mediation, I was inspired to change the trajectory of people in conflict by teaching them tools and strategies to improve their communication skills and prevent them from getting to the point of needing mediation. Weekly pdf agenda's will be sent in advance of classes that students are required to read and review in preparation for our class discussion. Teacher will also provide a pdf file at the close of the session that includes at-a-glance snapshots of all strategies learned throughout the session. Student is not required to purchase any materials.
