Students will learn math concepts (approximate levels 4th - 6th grade)
Class 1: Class introductions and learning about the wild mustang and their brand. We learn about the mustang and calculate when and where the mustang came from. Learning about the brand and symbols is fun. We also create our own math using some of the symbols from the mustang brands. I use personal mustang photos as well as materials gathered from the Bureau of Land Managements sight for the wild horses.
Class 2: This class is about Averages (mean) and calculating the average in several examples. We create our own ranch and find the average number of horses. We need hay for next season and need to calculate the average number of bales we need. We also learn about the Chincoteague wild ponies and Pony Penning day. For extra learning, we talk about the Chincoteague Pony Penning events and learners can watch videos and learn about the "salt water cowboys".
Class 3: Horse Blanket fitting - Measuring. During this class, learners discover how to measure a horse properly for a horse blanket. We discuss types of blankets and why a horse could be blanketed. We discuss how to measure the horse and calculate to find which blanket the horse in the story "should" have. We also touch on cinch (girth) measurements for a saddle. Learners discuss prices and learn about a sample tack shop. Learners also receive an extra fun video of my horse being measured for a blanket as a sample. This is a class that we host live from my barn!! I will use one of our horses to demonstrate how to measure for a blanket.
Class 4: This class we wrap up discussions about measurements and finish the lesson from the previous week. We also do measurements for stirrups for our saddle and talk more about our make believe saddle shop.
Class 5: Horse Body Confirmation. Learners use math equations as it relates to shapes and dimensions and measurements. We use geometry and physics to learn about horse body shape. We learn how to tell if a horse has good confirmation and would be a healthy shape and size for specific riding disciplines (english, western, dressage, etc). The activity for today will analyze the conformation. Learners will receive a photo of one of my horses to analyze and measure. For extra learning learners can find out more information about horse gathers and the Extreme Mustang Makeover.
Class 6: Let's plan to have a fun day. We'll wrap up any unfinished material and we'll have a fun horse day. The class together will decide a fun activity. It could be dress as a favorite horse book or movie character, have show and tell fun and show off your favorite things of play horse trivia games. Class will decide on the last day activity during class 4.

Sometimes learning math can be a challenge. I have discovered when math is interesting or fun, students learn it more easily and have a greater recall for the material. I have created my own horse math classes in the past and now have collaborated my own materials into this fun math with horses class.
By using the exciting topic of horses, we combine math concepts to learn and use. Learners will be excited to learn math and will have the ability to continue to practice it in the future.
I have taught young people about horses for years and was asked to combine my horse sense with math for learners to grow and learn from. Here it is. Join me and let's have some fun.
Please make sure your learner has a copy of Horse Lovers Math Level 2 workbook for class. Available in both book form or PDF.

Note: It would be helpful for parents to check in with their learners to assure they are understanding the concepts as well as turning in any assigned work. There will be some type of "homework" each class.
If anyone has any questions or concerns, please reach out to me. I'm happy to help.
We will be using the Horse Lovers Math Level 2 workbook by Deborah Stacey. Please purchase your own copy of this workbook. It is available in book form or PDF form.
We use handouts that I have created as well as some video and materials from youtube.
