수업 소개
In this ongoing course, Montessori math materials and other hands-on math materials will help students develop an understanding of abstract math concepts. Geometry concepts such as basic terminology, angles, perimeter and area will be included as well. An understanding of why math works the way it does and practical applications of mathematical principles will be included. It is suggested that students have certain math materials on hand to follow along in class, but it is not required. Many of these materials can easily be made at home by the student. See supply list. PREREQUISITE: Students should already know how to add, subtract, multiply and divide. If students need more practice with division, I have an ongoing division class to help with that specific math skill. PLEASE NOTE: Classes will be tailored to the students who are enrolled, so the following schedule is subject to change based on student abilities. IMPORTANT: Over the summer, I will be revamping my course offerings and plan to only teach FLEX classes through OS next school year. I will be spending my time homeschooling a high school aged daughter, and this is new terrain for me. After my daughter graduates (or if she decides to return to a brick and mortar school at some point), I will once again offer live classes on OS. Scissors will be used during some of the geometry lessons.
Short YouTube math videos may occasionally be used to reinforce some of the math concepts being covered during this class. While YouTube is not intended for visit and use by children under 13 (and thus a non-COPPA compliant resource), Outschool has developed a way for educators to use YouTube videos in their classes in a legally compliant way. All educators need to do is add the YouTube link to their Classroom Post – Outschool embeds the link on its platform so that learners remain on the Outschool platform and don’t access the YouTube website.
The Math Is Fun website has some math and logic puzzles that we may use occasionally to add enrichment to our math lessons.
Free virtual Montessori Materials are available at https://montessoritools.org/ that students may use with parental consent.

1-cm grid paper and a pencil should be brought to every class (can be found online for free) A fraction set is required for the fractions lessons. (May be purchased online, either circles or rectangles are fine. Free printable fraction circles can be found online and printed on cardstock. These should be carefully cut out before the first fractions lesson.) A yellow decimal board and decimal cubes (or pony beads) is suggested for decimals lessons. (May be purchased online or is easily handmade out of cardboard, markers, Dixie cups, and pony beads. I will share a photo for those who want to make their own material.) A decimal Montessori checkerboard is suggested for decimal multiplication lessons. (May be purchased online or is easily handmade out of cardboard, adhesive felt squares, and markers. I will share a photo for those who want to make their own material.) Hands-On Equations: Student Kit is strongly suggested for pre-algebra lessons. $5 at https://www.borenson.com/Products/Parent-Materials A protractor will be used for many geometry lessons. Scissors will be used during some of the geometry lessons. *I will share instructions for alternative hand-made items in the classroom.

Ms. Sarah has a master's degree in education and Montessori certification, plus over 20 years of elementary classroom experience. She enjoys helping students understand abstract concepts using math materials that make sense to them and seeing those ah-ha moments when students grasp a difficult concept for the first time.
