Have you heard of the award-winning musical Six? Have you wondered why Henry VIII is one of the most famous kings of England? Where does history end and creativity begin in the musical Six? Who are the women behind the school rhyme, “Divorced, Beheaded, Died: Divorced, Beheaded, Survived”? Find out the true stories of the six wives of Henry VIII: Katherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn, Jane Seymour, Anne of Cleves, Catherine Howard, and Kateryn Parr. Class 1: Historic context of England in the 1500s when Henry VIII comes to power. Creation of the Church of England Katherine of Aragon- facts and song: "No Way" Class 2: Ann Boleyn and Jane Seymour facts and songs: "Don't Lose Ur Head" and "Hear of Stone" Class 3: The artist Holbein, Anne Cleves, and Catherine Howard-facts and songs "Haus of Holbein", "Get Down", and "All You Wanna Do" Class 4: Katheryn Parr and the children of Henry VIII-facts and song: "I Don't Need Your Love" and "Six"

Both the historic facts and song lyrics contain sexual and campy elements. Several of the songs are full of strong innuendo about sex acts. The play's story also features strong, empowered women and conversations about surviving and their personal impact on history. Both history and the play discuss divorce, accusations of incest and infidelity, death from childbirth, and overall mistreatment of women by society (including imprisonment and execution).
During the class, I will discuss facts about the context of history during the reign of Henry VIII, when the role of women in society was very different than today.
