In this class, learners will gain strategies and techniques from the greatest Orators, Debater and public speakers of our time.

We will learn the essence of expressing ourselves, articulating our thoughts or ideas and using our words to persuade and inspire.

Examples of debate topics:
🎙 Should All Police Be Armed?
🎙 Is air pollution really a big deal?
🎙 Will climate change protests make a difference?
 
This class is to introduce learners to speech writing, delivery and debate. Learners will all be given a chance to present their opening argument. Then we will go to the rebuttal round where they are encouraged to counter the opposition's arguments. 

A debate can't be won just by speaking, it's just as important to listen. 

We will encourage them to listen to the other side and think of ways to weaken their points.

Debating is a brilliant way to develop children's skills in many areas, including:
Improving confidence and empathy
Critical listening and speaking
Being able to look at both sides of an issue before deciding
Researching skills
Expressing themselves more fluently


45-Minute Debate Class Plan for Ages 12-16
Objective:
Students will develop critical thinking, public speaking, and teamwork skills by engaging in a structured debate.

Lesson Outline
1. Warm-Up Activity (5 minutes)

Objective: Introduce the topic and build comfort in speaking.
Each student states their opinion in one sentence.
Emphasizing respect for differing opinions.

2. Topic Introduction & Group Division (5 minutes)

Objective: Assign the debate topic
Briefly explain the importance of presenting both sides of an argument.

3. Team Preparation (15 minutes)

Objective: Each student is to research, brainstorm, and organize arguments.

Articles , information etc. will be provided 
but students are also welcome to do their own research

Define their main argument 

Assign roles:
( Depending on the number or learners )
Opening Speaker: Introduces the team’s position.
Rebuttal Speaker: Responds to the opposing arguments.
Closing Speaker: Summarizes the  position.


4. Debate (15 minutes)

Objective: present and defend arguments.

Format:
Opening Statements (2 minutes )
Each team’s opening speaker presents their main arguments.
Rebuttals (2 minutes )
Rebuttal speakers respond to the opposing arguments.
Closing Statements (1 minute )
Closing speakers summarize their  position and key points.
Open Floor Questions (5 minutes)
Students from the audience (or teacher) ask the speakers questions.

5. Reflection & Feedback (5 minutes)
Objective: Reflect on the debate and discuss what was learned.
