This literature class is part one of a two part series that would cover an entire academic year. Though the title says "Grade 7" the chosen novels and the class work are suitable for a wide range of ages and I welcome anyone at this reading level to join! In fact, the Grade 6, 7, and 8 classes are all quite similar in reading level and could be taken in any order desired. I always suggest that parents choose which one of the levels to take based on the book list and their learner's interests...
Students will learn about character traits, plot, and themes. Students will learn new vocabulary. Students will learn to summarize what they have read. Students will work on interpersonal skills as they discuss the novel with their peers.
I have been teaching these books and others that tackle hard topics for many years. I also teach US History and have a lot of experience teaching prejudice and racism, as well as the historical themes in several of these books.
Students will need to have a physical, digital, or audio copy of the following novels: Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman Prairie Lotus by Linda Sue Park The Crossover by Kwame Alexander I will provide a pdf of the study guide.
Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry deals with racism in the Jim Crow South. The Graveyard Book is about a boy who is orphaned when his parents are murdered, though the murder is not talked about at length or in a graphic way at all. Prairie Lotus deals with racism, sexism, lynching, and contains a scene where two men in town make suggestive comments about the main character. However, this is a middle grade reader and these are done in a way that is entirely age appropriate for middle schoolers. The Crossover contains the death of a main character and may not be suitable for sensitive readers.
