Everyone knows who William Shakespeare was, but this class delves deeper into what makes him important, entertaining, and applicable to our lives today. Please note that this is a Flex course, meaning that the students will watch a video posted on subsequent Mondays with the material presented by the instructor. I love words, and I love Shakespeare (I sure didn't in high school, though!). After earning degrees in journalism and French literature from UNC-Chapel Hill, and after working numerous years as a journalist and writer, I came back to both poetry and Shakespeare, and I found a deep love for both. Today, I delight in teaching Shakespeare to students because Shakespeare is great fun. On the teaching side, I've taught on Outschool for more than two years, and I have more than 800 five-star reviews. My classes range from beginning writing to essays to poetry and Shakespeare. I also have five kids of my own, and I'm happy to report that they can all quote Sonnet 116!
Shakespeare did use violence in his plays, and no examination of his works would be complete without them. There is one graphic that details all the deaths with black and white clip art images. In one class, we will look at the skeletal remains of King Richard III (not gory). Certain facets of Shakespeare's life, notably that his wife was pregnant before marriage, may or may not be mentioned, depending on the maturity of the students and at the teacher's discretion. While we will discuss some of the conspiracy theories regarding whether or not Shakespeare wrote his plays, the instructor will reiterate that these are simply for fun discussion and critical thinking.
