수업 소개
The course will cover a wide range of topics geared toward giving students a comprehensive look at the film and television world. They will be taught screenwriting, producing, tech requirements and cameras, cinematography, directing, audio, voice over, editing, storyboarding, animation, and more. Our final project entails each student producing their own short film and will be included in a student film festival. In order to be eligible to participate in the final project, students must complete at least 80% of their assignments. No special equipment is required. Students will need access to a cellphone or other camera for filming. Any basic editing software will be fine. There are many free options online that we will discuss with the students. Other than that, they will need reliable internet for the group classes and to receive their video assignments. Commitment and dedication are also required. Students will get out of the course what they put into it. To excel in this curriculum students will need to finish their assignments, as each one builds on the last. The complete course syllabus will include: 1. Introduction to Film-making - What will we be studying? What will you need? A look at assignments and critiques. 2. The Evolution of Film-making - Brief history of film-making. 3. Storytelling and the Pitch - Seven story archetypes & story discussion. 4. Screenplay Pt 1: Three-Act Structure - How to structure your screenplay. 5. Screenplay Pt 2: Proper Formatting and Why it Matters - What is pacing? How to control story speed. 6. Storyboarding Basics - Why pre-visualization is key to success. 7. Filming Basics Pt 1: Setting the Scene (How to Make a Movie, What Goes into it, etc) - Planning for success and dealing with challenges. 8. Filming Basics Pt 2: Why Vectors and Lighting Matter - Little things make a huge difference! 9. Directing Pt 1: What a Director Does - How to become a visual storyteller. 10. Directing Pt 2: How to Direct a Film - This is where things get real! 11. Producing Pt 1: The Importance of the Producer and What They Do. - Why a good producer is the most important person on set. 12. Producing Pt 2: Making Things Happen - Learning how to make something from nothing. 13. Cinematography: Choosing Proper Angles to Serve Story - Cinematography as an art form. 14. Editing: The Importance of the Edit - Putting your footage together. 15. Audio: The Hidden 50% - Visuals are only part of the story. 16. Financing: Why Money Matters - Without money, you’re going nowhere. 17. TV vs Film: Similarities and Differences - TV and film are different in some ways and the same in others. 18. Documentary Film-making - How to make a documentary film. 19. Animation: Cartoon Principles & CGI - Stop-motion and beyond. 20. Getting Your Production on Television - How to actually get seen.

Our goal is to help students feel confident telling stories in a visual medium. they will gain skills in producing, directing, and general visual storytelling. By the end of the course they will feel comfortable producing a short film from concept to final edit.

We will watch a prerecorded video each week during class that will lay out the skill for that course and then discuss the assignment, answer student questions, and go deeper into the subject if needed. Each video is taught by the instructor and includes film examples of each aspect of production to help students gain a better understanding of the principles involved.

Mr. Heumann has worked in the television and film industry for almost 20 years as Senior Producer of the long-running program At Your Leisure, along with The Geek Report, County Seat, G3EK, and others. He has written and directed dozens of short films as well as full-length features, and has published six sci-fi thriller novels and numerous short stories. Over his career he has produced over a thousand hours of television content, filming, editing, writing, and producing as needed. He has also appeared regularly on-camera as reporter and host, so he is able to teach aspects from both sides of production. His current work as a full-time novelist has allowed him to branch out even further, developing relationships with creators that will allow an even broader depth to this year's Film & Broadcasting Course.
