Are you interested in fashion? Do you like being creative while you learn? This is the history class for you! Each class is completely standalone. Learners can drop in and out, based on their interests, over the course of 16 weeks. After that period, the class will be rescheduled and begin again with Topic 1 again. In the first 30-40 minutes, students will be introduced to the ancient civilization of the week. Then, we will discuss ancient fashion, accessories and makeup styles, based on the archaeological record. We will also discover how they made their textiles and what ancient people used to make their vibrant colors and dyes. We will also discuss how we know what they wore in the past. I teach in an open lecture style, where I go through engaging visuals, stories, and information. Students are asked open-ended questions throughout and are encouraged to ask questions of me at any time. Then about for 10-15 minutes, learners draw their own styles, either in from their own imagination or by looking at a visual from the lesson. During this time, I will answer any and all questions they have about archaeology and the civilization of the day. In the last 5-10 minutes, students will share their masterpieces with the class. We will reflect on what we learned and ask any last-minute questions. As we are discussing various civilizations from the ancient world, all facts and theories presented are grounded in archaeological evidence. The information is drawn from archaeological publications and presented in an age-appropriate way. I attempt to present the latest archaeological evidence when possible. I always offer a multiple perspectives approach; this shows young learners how to discuss the archaeological evidence with an open mind and in a constructive and respectful way. I am a trained archaeologist, and I excavated at sites such as Mytilene and Kommos in Greece for many field seasons. I have travelled extensively through Europe, and I have taught Greek and Roman art, archaeology and mythology at Concordia University, Montréal. I held a position at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, Canada, where I created and led tours for children on the topics of Greek, Roman and Egyptian archaeology, the Medieval period, dinosaurs and natural history. More recently, I have taught labs on water science and solar energy to Kindergarten and Grade 1 students through Scientists in School. Since July 2021, I have had the pleasure of teaching many archaeology and ancient civilizations classes on Outschool.
