Using the ever-popular baking soda and vinegar chemical reaction, students will observe how gas and other pressures can force magma out of the Earth during a volcano. (A drop or two of red food color, if desired, will give their "magma" the right color. A sprinkle of paprika, black pepper and/or red pepper flakes will simulate the semi-solid rocks and lava bombs that may come out of a volcano. Students will be able to compare and contrast the main types of volcanoes, of faults and earthquakes, focus and epicenter, and seismic waves. Students will be able to discuss the possible causes of tsunamis and the location and causes of the Ring of Fire. Students will be able to use a map to assess their risk of these events at their home.

Baking soda, vinegar (red food coloring and paprika, black pepper or red pepper flakes if desired for effect) an empty water or soda bottle for the reaction, and a pan for any spillover. Links will be provided for any needed notes sheets. Students will need to print a copy for their use during class.
