Students will be able to identify the theme of the story, explain the use of irony, and detail how the main character changes throughout the text. They will cite information from the story to support their answers. 
I am an english teacher in the state of New Jersey. I am certified to teach grades K-12, with a speciality in middle and high school instruction. I have taught this story as an example of irony and character development for over ten years.
Students will be provided with a free digital copy of the story. 
The main character of this story robs banks, bribes others, and changes his identity to make a romantic interest fall in love with him. When we first meet the character, he is in jail. Students must be mature enough to focus on the reformation of the character instead of  celebrating his criminal origins.   This is why this class has been designed for middle school and high school students.
