*Don't see a time that works for you? Please feel free to request another or send me a message if you have questions!* In this course students will learn: 1. What a personal essay is 2. Tips on writing a compelling personal essay 3. Why writing about their experiences is important and can be a way to express themselves 4. Other times that personal essays may benefit them (I.e. college applications, in their careers, when advocating for a specific issue, and so on). I will start by screen sharing and showing brief examples of interesting personal essays. Students will have the opportunity to read their essays aloud if they wish, (this will not be required), and have their peers give constructive feedback. Students will also be given additional prompts to use later on their own if they wish. While this course can benefit students academically it is first and foremost about self-expression. We will write together, relax and work on our writing skills while having fun! While students can bring whatever level of writing skill they have to the class it is probably most beneficial to students who already enjoy writing in some form.

Students will learn about what a personal essay is, how writing a personal essay can be used as a form of self-expression and the academic applications of such writing. They will have the opportunity to briefly share their work if they wish. The goal is to help students get through writer's block, improve their writing skills, and to have fun!

Prompts will ask students to reminisce, dream and write about their own lives. While prompts will not refer to any sensitive topics, parents may wish to talk about or review what their students write in case they choose to write about anything that evokes a difficult emotion.
