***THIS IS NOT AN ART CLASS. It is a creative WRITING class.*** TEACHING STYLE: Being able to paint a picture in the reader’s mind is the beginning of great descriptive writing. In this 6 week flexible course that meets by video and in the classroom, not live, learners will engage in an interactive, colorful power point presentation where they will learn descriptive writing techniques to make their writing come alive for others to see and experience. Each week we will focus on a creative writing "P.A.I.N.T with your Words" element, that we will apply to our writing creative paragraph, poems, and stories. Students will be given an opportunity to share what they've written before the class lecture begins. Activities such as the 8 Parts of Speech picture scavenger hunts, creative video challenges, and artwork will be assigned and shared as well as other writing activities. COURSE DESCRIPTION: A flexible schedule learner lead course **Videos and worksheets will be posted on Mondays and due by the end of the week. Video activities, challenges, and/or art projects will be given throughout the week to reinforce the weekly lesson. Lesson 1: Learners will be introduced to syntax and why it's important in writing. Then we will review the 8 parts of speech and how to write strong sentences using various sentence structures. A "Mad Libs" parts of speech review, stair poetry and a story writing prompt will be given to reinforce the lesson Lesson 2: Introduction to the acronym P.A.I.N.T. and how to use words to be descriptive so that the reader will see the same picture in their head that we see. We will learn the difference between active and passive writing through examples and writing exercises, and students will practice active writing through prompts. Lesson 3: Writers will learn the difference between "showing and telling" especially when writing emotion and how this descriptive writing technique brings their writing to life. Creative writing exercises and prompts will be assigned as well as an emotion collage which will be a fun and creative way to practice showing instead of telling. Lesson 4: Learners will identify the five senses and learn how to use them in their descriptive writing of setting. Creative writing sensory homework will be given so learners can experience the five senses for themselves and use it in their writing. Activities such as a sensory walk and the "blind paper bag" sensory activity which students will be encouraged to video will be a fun way to enhance the lesson. Lesson 5: We will learn about strong nouns, verbs, adjectives, and when and when not to use adverbs. We will learn Japanese (syllable) poetry that emphasize the importance of nouns, verbs, and adjectives. Students will also have a fun story writing prompt to continue to practice all they are learning. Lesson 6: Through writing exercises, we will learn about figurative language (similes, metaphors, idioms, onomatopoeia, alliteration, hyperbole and personification.) Learners will write personification short stories and share then in the classroom. COURSE REQUIREMENTS: • Learners should have a grasp on the basic 8 parts of speech. • Learners should be able to write with a pencil. • Learners should be able to write paragraphs. • Should have a good understanding of the spoken English language. • Perfect spelling and punctuation are not necessary. • Learner may need homework assistance from parents.

I'm a published author who developed these creative writing techniques when I started teaching an elective course at my kids' school over 10 years ago. I found that many students didn't know how to write creatively and bring the picture in their mind to the paper, so I designed a program for children using the techniques I used as an author. I'm also the author or an award winning novel writing course for teens called "Release the Novel in You" which you can find on Amazon.
What parents are saying:
Gina is a phenomenal writing teacher! We have loved working with her. We have a range of ages and she is great at adapting to their ages and learning styles. She's very patient and good at helping them focus. My kids have learned so much and been stretched and challenged in the area of writing. I highly recommend her to anyone looking to advance in any area of writing! - Bethany mother of 4 tutored students.
