My expertise in teaching Black history and culture stems from a combination of academic training and personal background. I hold a minor in African American Studies, providing me with a specialized academic foundation in this field. Moreover, as an African American woman, I bring lived experience and a deep cultural understanding that enriches my approach to teaching Black history. This unique blend of academic knowledge and personal insight enables me to create an inclusive, nuanced, and engaging learning environment for students exploring this essential subject matter.
Week 1: Introduction to Black History and Storytelling Notebook or sketchbook Writing materials (pens, pencils, markers) Any personal cultural items or artifacts they'd like to share or incorporate into the storytelling activity Week 2: Notable Figures Through Art and Writing Art supplies (paper, canvas, paints, colored pencils, markers) Writing materials (pens, pencils) Reference materials about influential Black figures (books, online resources) Week 3: Historical Moments Through Writing and Drawing Paper or poster board for timelines Drawing materials (pens, pencils, markers) Research materials about pivotal events in Black history (books, online resources) Week 4: Celebrating Culture Through Creative Presentations Art supplies based on their preferred creative medium (paints, clay, collage materials, etc.) Presentation materials (poster board, digital presentation software if presenting digitally)
We will refer to a thoughtfully curated array of sources including literature, digital platforms, and multimedia resources that encapsulate the diverse spectrum of Black history. Sources for Curriculum: 1. "The Warmth of Other Suns" by Isabel Wilkerson Explores the Great Migration and its impact on Black history in America. 2. "Voice of Freedom: Fannie Lou Hamer" by Carole Boston Weatherford Chronicles the life and activism of Fannie Lou Hamer, a prominent figure in the Civil Rights Movement. 3. "Hidden Figures" by Margot Lee Shetterly Sheds light on the remarkable contributions of Black female mathematicians at NASA during the space race.
