This is one of my one-time classes that is part of my Crack the Code and Read Like a Hero series that focuses on the Simple View of Reading, specifically the decoding side, from the Science of Reading research.
The Simple View of Reading is:
Decoding (D) x Language Comprehension (LC) = Reading Comprehension (RC)
During our time together we will warm up with learning what a syllable is by counting syllables in words. Then we will learn about 1 syllable words with the...Students will learn what a syllable is. Students will learn that all syllables have at least one vowel. They will be able to locate the vowel in the word, and decide which sound the vowel will make. They will be able label and recognize the pattern for the bossy-r syllable..
In my 25+ years of teaching I have been trained in all kinds of different ways to teach students to read. This most recent method of teaching students to understand how and why letters make different sounds when put with other letters and placed in certain parts of the words has completely changed my way of thinking. I have seen huge gains in the students I work with in my brick and mortar school by teaching students the syllable types and how those syllable types work together to make bigger words.
