Students will go beyond the standard vocabulary lists and "right-there" type questions, common in younger students when they are LEARNING TO READ, and practice READING TO LEARN by analyzing a novel and looking at the "bigger picture" that the author is trying to convey.
I have been teaching sixth-grade reading for over ten years, and in recent years I have played an integral role in collaborating with leadership at my school to build and sustain updated, well-stocked classroom libraries at the middle school level for every teacher in grades 5-8, regardless of the subject they teach... children need access to high-quality literature throughout the school day AND at home, not just in ELA classes!
I find that having a physical copy of the book Coraline (by Neil Gaiman) helps to immerse the reader into the story, but they may also choose to read with an ebook, audiobook, or the read-aloud videos by the author that can be found at www.mousecircus.com/videos. Handouts and activities that are shared here in the classroom will require access to Google Slides. Any other online platforms used for engagement will not require students to login, and all ongoing discussions will take place here in the Outschool classroom.
