수업 소개

영어 수준 - 알 수 없음
미국 9학년 - 12학년 학년
Over the course of four weeks, learners will discover the ease in which they can create a college worthy essay. By breaking down the steps into a game or puzzle, we will start from the blank page until we have a complete essay. From these steps, we will learn the process of preparing for the college world.
As an English Tutor for the college and university level, I know how daunting it is for students to create an essay. Staring at the blank page can be hard. But I've learned several tricks to break the task down and turn a large, scary problem into a fun puzzle.
(All group work is optional, as I am aware many parents searching for Flex Classes desire to be able to do the work without a group.)

First Week:
We will start with the research process. In a recorded lecture, I will break down the brainstorming process. How can learners come up with a study topic? What must we think about to come up with something solid to research? During this lecture, learners will discover how to create a game for themselves which will help them brainstorm an essay topic. The game can then be used in class to play with other learners. They will learn how to narrow or broaden their topic to maximize "searchability" (a term we will learn in class).
Later in the week, we will learn how to research. Which websites are better for research and how to spot fake research that learners may discover along their researching process. This will come with another lecture and another game. Learners will be given "grading stickers" to grade a websites as "pass" or "fail" for the researching process. Then they can compare their grading with each other and see if others got the same grade. Among themselves, learners will be able to see what research they have discovered and will then attempt to play the same "pass" or "fail" game with each other.

Second Week:
Next students will learn how to gather information from the places they have researched. Another lecture will be created, this time showing how to color code for priority information and secondary information. How to work out if information is important will be the product of a third game, where learners will participate in a word-scavenger hunt. They will learn important words to pick out from sentences and how to find them by playing this game. The scavenger hunt list and passages will be provided in a print-out, while the concept will be something learners can apply to any essay research they they have.
Learners will then assemble a list of the research sentences and information they have found to prepare for next week.

Third Week:
The essay process begins. A new lecture of how to structure a college level English essay format will begin, as well as go over some of the expectations that are typically required in college. These will form the structure of the next game, which will this time come in the form of a puzzle. Learners will create a puzzle out of their research material and begin assembling it into an "essay puzzle." The process will be gone over in the classroom in more detail, but learners will be able to work out how to structure their essay around a "puzzle" while also learning how to add their own pieces to the puzzle as they go. By the end of the third week, learners are expected to have the outline of their puzzle (and thus also their essay) completed.

Fourth and Fifth Week:
During the fourth and final week, learners will discover what it takes to finish the puzzle that they made in week three and how it has now changed into an essay. Learners will begin on adding the last of their own pieces to the puzzle and begin to work out how to check their essay over for mistakes. During this time, learners will get to check each other's essays for errors and learn how to spot errors in their own. During a lecture, we will go over how to spot common errors and the best ways to eliminate them.
For a final game, learners will play a quick Blooket game to go over the new information they have discovered.
