Students are LOVING this Hot Wheels Engineering Club- CARS AND RAMPS Part 1 of the Forces in Motion Series Can you create a ramp that makes your Hot Wheels car fly with speed? This and many other similar questions will be explored in this hands-on class. Hot Wheels naturally engages children’s curiosity and teaches them science and math without them even realizing it! Our Hot Wheel Engineering Club introduces kids to STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math), promotes a Growth Mindset and develops critical thinking skills. With inquiry-based investigation, guidance and discussion, students will build, test and revise their creations. Each week, we will explore a new concept in a fun and engaging way. Students must have their own Hot Wheels track and car at the very minimum. Please see the supplies list for other supplies needed. Students will learn some basic engineering concepts, practice a growth mindset and utilize problem-solving skills which will help them deal with real world issues. Each week, Learners will be required to: ✔️ Utilize the Nearpod link sent to engage in the lesson ✔️ Use toy vehicles 🚙 and household materials to complete each challenge ✔️ Report their findings and results of each challenge ✔️Comment on other Learner’s work if applicable ✔️Additional activities may include: photo uploads of finished work or memory and matching games for concept review. STEM Topics Concepts Covered over the course of 5-weeks 🚘: Week 1 Energy: We will learn how to maximize energy and explore various challenges to see which track designs and car features will facilitate the best energy. Week 2 Aerodynamics: We will learn about aerodynamic car features and explore various challenges to see which aspect moves our cars the fastest or slowest and why. Week 3 Resistance: We will learn about the science of resistance and explore various challenges such as changing or adding friction and resistance. Week 4 Momentum: We will learn about how momentum increases with the right design and explore various challenges that can continue momentum without touching our cars. Week 5: Mass: We will learn how mass and weight affect car performance and explore various challenges of changing the mass and weight of our cars to increase or decrease force of motion track *Please note that each class has a posted minimum. All classes that do not meet the minimum within 24 hours of the class might be canceled. For live meetings, Ms. Kelli will wait for 10 minutes in the classroom. If no one shows up, the class will be cancelled. I will reach out to you if this is the case. Otherwise you may view the recorded lesson.
학습 목표
The main engineering learning outcomes of the Hot Wheel Engineering Club are
1) creative problem solving through engaging, exploring, explaining, elaborating and evaluating
2) persisting even when encountering an unexpected and difficult challenge (Growth Mindset)
3) recognizing opportunities for improving the design even after you think you're "done"
4) using creativity and imagination to generate and extend a design beyond an initial idea
5) implement Next Generation Science Standards, Common Core Standards for Mathematics & Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts
