Establish Ground Rules and Expectations: Start your class by setting clear ground rules that emphasize respect, open-mindedness, and constructive dialogue. Encourage students to ask questions and express their thoughts but stress the importance of doing so respectfully. Moderate Discussions Actively: As the instructor, actively moderate discussions. Pay close attention to the tone and content of what is being said. If a student or parent/guardian expresses strong emotions or an unsolicited viewpoint, acknowledge their input without judgment. Create a Safe Space: Reiterate that the classroom is a safe and inclusive space where everyone's perspectives are valued. Encourage students to share their feelings and thoughts while emphasizing the importance of being respectful and open to different viewpoints. Redirect and Reframe: If a discussion becomes heated or overly emotional, redirect it to focus on factual information and evidence. Encourage students to back their claims with credible sources and data to foster a more evidence-based conversation. Private Messaging Option: Some learning platforms may offer private messaging options. If a student or parent/guardian wishes to discuss a sensitive topic privately, make this option available to them. Stay Neutral and Inclusive: Maintain a neutral stance on controversial issues, emphasizing the importance of providing balanced information. Encourage students to consider multiple perspectives and engage in critical thinking rather than promoting a particular viewpoint. Address Misinformation: If misconceptions arise, calmly and respectfully correct them with accurate information supported by reputable sources. Avoid confrontational or judgmental language when addressing misinformation. Involve Parents/Guardians Proactively: Reach out to parents/guardians in advance to share the topics you'll be discussing and your approach to handling sensitive issues. Encourage parents/guardians to have open discussions at home and seek clarification from you if they have concerns. Seek Support from Outschool: If a situation escalates and becomes unmanageable, reach out to Outschool support for guidance and assistance in resolving the issue. Debrief After Class: Consider holding a brief post-class discussion to address any lingering concerns or questions. This can help students process their emotions and clarify their understanding.
