I created this class to ignite each student’s imagination and interest in creating their own way of making money. The main character in Make Your Own Money is an entrepreneur himself, and he highlights other young entrepreneurs’ stories as well throughout the book. The purpose is to let students know that there are other “kidpreneurs” contributing their gifts to the world, and give them the tools and inspiration to realize they can do it too!

During the study of this book, students will be guided in completing a mix of comprehension questions as they analyze the text. Students will also be required to think about themselves and what they have to offer the world. They will create a brainstorm about their own talents and skills. These activities are meant to immerse them in the text and make personal connections.

We will then discuss and journal about what they could do for a business, create a budget for their business, create a name and slogan for their business, and create ways to stay inspired when things don’t go the way they plan. The final project will be a future collage for where they see themselves in the next three years.

This course meets over five consecutive days in order to keep engagement with the text high and have time to complete the future collage on the last day. Students will need to complete short assignments and nightly readings in preparation for the next day’s class discussion and comprehension checks. Reading comprehension is of the utmost importance, so students are expected to interact with the text on a literary level.

The schedule is as follows for each 50 minute class:
Day 1: Discuss introduction and p. 1-25; how do you earn money
Day 2: Discuss p. 26-49; create a business plan
Day 3: Discuss p. 51-79; be money smart
Day 4: Discuss p. 80-99 create final project; be inspired

My teaching philosophy is that students own their learning by being an active participant in the learning process. My teaching style follows a hybrid model where I set the expectation for student success, conduct a mini lesson, model the lesson's concept with the students, and support them as they apply the concept independently. Classmates and I are available to support students and provide feedback. We are a community of learners.

This will be a very interactive class with students sharing their work, ideas, and dreams with me and their peers in this safe space. There will be open discussions, short writings, and feedback.
