Book of the Month club is all about discussing what we read.

Each month you will read a new book (The list is below)--
Come to the club having read our book and be prepared to talk about what you thought. I will send you a thinking sheet prior to the club but you are not required to complete any written work. It just helps you organize your thoughts if you would like.

Each of our book selections has a theme of social justice. The books have been chosen carefully to encourage positive conversation. The books will help us be better humans by thinking through issues that have an impact on people who are different from us. I will ask questions, you will get to ask your peers questions and we will just talk. This is not a class where you will be writing anything or answering comprehension questions. It is all about deeper discussions. Just like an adult book club.

This class is ongoing meeting ONCE PER MONTH. Each month/class we will discuss a different book. You can join us at any time as long as you read the book before attending!
Come to our book club having read the book. Here is our schedule:

February- Amal Unbound, by Aisha Saeed

📚How are you like the main character?
📚What part of the book really made you think?
📚What part of the book upset you and why?
📚Why do you think the author included .... as a character?
📚What experience in the book can you relate to?

As a general practice, I always encourage parents to be aware of what their children are reading. You could read this alongside your child or on your own as well. I also suggest parents look at Common Sense Media for specific information by title. These are books written for this age group that addresses social justice issues. They will spark positive conversation! This is from Common Sense Media: "Genesis Begins Again" -- "There's occasional strong language by the parents ("damn," "hell," "Oh, God!" ) and slurs and mean nicknames about people's skin color." "The Parker Inheritance"-- "The story deals frankly and thoughtfully with both subtle and blatant racism in the 1950s and today. Most racial slurs are alluded to, not spelled out, though one character is called "tar baby," and another, "darkie lover." Some whites threaten a young black girl with a doll that has a noose around her neck. Characters also deal with divorce, bullying by peers, and gay identity. Though the issues are serious, they're woven skillfully into a suspenseful, page-turning plot, and there's warmth and lightness in the families and friendships."

I have been a classroom teacher for 15 years. I always have found it important to address social justice issues and have found novels and stories to be the best bridge for discussion. Teaching social justice through literature is something I have been practicing for years in my classroom and have worked with several students on the issue. The way we will address the issues is just through discussion of the characters in the story and what we learn from them.
