수업 경험

미국 등급 6 - 8
I have been a classroom teacher for 15 years. I always have found it important to address social justice issues and have found novels and stories to be the best bridge for discussion. Teaching social justice through literature is something I have been practicing for years in my classroom and have worked with several students on the issue. The way we will address the issues is just through discussion of the characters in the story and what we learn from them.

As a general practice, I always encourage parents to be aware of what their children are reading. You could read this alongside your child or on your own as well.

I also suggest parents look at Common Sense Media for specific information by title.

These are books written for this age group that addresses social justice issues. They will spark positive conversation!

This is from Common Sense Media:
"Genesis Begins Again" -- "There's occasional strong language by the parents ("damn," "hell," "Oh, God!" ) and slurs and mean nicknames about people's skin color."
"The Parker Inheritance"-- "The story deals frankly and thoughtfully with both subtle and blatant racism in the 1950s and today. Most racial slurs are alluded to, not spelled out, though one character is called "tar baby," and another, "darkie lover." Some whites threaten a young black girl with a doll that has a noose around her neck. Characters also deal with divorce, bullying by peers, and gay identity. Though the issues are serious, they're woven skillfully into a suspenseful, page-turning plot, and there's warmth and lightness in the families and friendships."
