In this positive and safe discussion-based class, students will study the text, exposition, deeply embedded themes and wonderfully layered characters, along with examples of figurative language and voice.
Background: This is a sequel to When Zachary Beaver Came to Town so it is highly suggested that the learner read, and hopefully take the Book LInks class on the Zachary Beaver book before reading this book and taking the class.
Summary: "In 2001, seventh grader Rylee WIlson, and new student Joe, whose father was a NYC first responder on 9/11, decide to find Zachary Beaver after he visited Antler, Texas as a circus sideshow act twenty years earlier, and reunite him with Toby, Rylee's father." This book connects characters and plot events richly from the first book into this novel in a way that blends the decisions and character motives of the people in the 1970s and the same characters, with some additions, in 2001. It is a fascinating read that I could not put down after meeting the characters in the first book.

In this class, learners will be asked to read approximately 1/2 the book for each session noting important settings, plot events, character details, figurative language, voice, emotion, and mood and will be reintroduced to characters from the first book. This all leads to very positive, supportive discussions where learners become comfortable sharing and building off each others' ideas while using the book for details and evidence to reinforce their ideas. These discussion, often refocused by what students contribute and share, will include study of the deeply created and layered characters, their decisions, protagonists/antagonists, conflicts and decision, vocabulary, plot events, climax and resolutions and themes such as deep rooted friendships, thoughtful decision making, dealing with conflicts and loss, and so many more which are all presented through the eyes of this gifted writer in this YA novel.

One subplot involves Joe and his Mom moving across the country from NYC to Anter, Texas as a result of Joe's father having been a first- responder. While Joe and a main character form a strong friendship, it is clear that his mom and he have not had time to process the 9/11 situation in which Joe's father did perish while saving others. Please have conversations, as you feel necessary, regarding the events of 9/11 so that your learner has a background on the topic. While the book does not go into depth on the subject, it is clear that Joe's dad is a hero, deeply missed, and unfairly taken from his family and friends. I will be sticking to specifics and facts, not my own thoughts regarding 9/11 should questions come up. If details are asked, I will be using the author notes in Ground Zero by Alan Gratz for factual information, and please remember this is one of many plots in the novel that deal with reuniting two characters and how other characters have changed and grown over the last twenty years.

I have several novels/ Book Links book clubs which deal with the topic including Ground Zero, The Day the World Came to Town 9/11 in Gander, Newfoundland and I have read extensively to study the history of this period and also watch documentaries, and , again, please remember this is one very important plot and the book deals with so much more and it is all warmly, thoughtfully constructed and is a great novel for adults also.
