This book is obviously very close to what readers have experienced during the pandemic. They will make connections between their own experiences and the characters involved in the Yellow Fever Epidemic in 1793. Readers will be fascinated as they read about the medical research and treatment that occurred during that time in history. The novel is quite graphic when it describes the way patients were treated and the bodies disposed of, but they will also realize how different that time was from the current pandemic. 

Slavery and servanthood will be discussed, as well as the notable bravery of the Free African Society during this epidemic. 

I have taught this book in the classroom many times, and am always open to answering questions that the students may have.
