Week 1Lesson 1NO reading is required for the first classWe will learn a little about the author. We will talk about the story elements. We will learn how to keep a vocabulary journal and discuss what we will do in class. We will guess what this book might be about as we read a short summary. We will draw a new book cover for our book.Lesson 2Read chapters 1 - 4 before classWe will go over our vocabulary words through a few games of Hangman. We will discuss our study questions for reading comprehension. We will talk about foreshadowing and look through the chapter titles in the book. Do they give away what might take place in that chapter? Why or why not? We will talk about where we would take a glass elevator if we could. We will talk about what kinds of things our elevator would do or where it would go. We will draw pictures of what our elevator might look like.Week 2Lesson 3Read chapters 5 - 8 before classWe will go over vocabulary words and discuss our study questions for reading comprehension. We will talk about the setting of the story. We will create an alien, name it and give it characteristics while we talk about alliteration. What does that mean? Why is it used? We will find examples of it in our story. We will talk about honesty and deception.Lesson 4Read chapters 9 - 12 before classWe will go over vocabulary words and discuss our study questions for reading comprehension. We will talk about the characters in our story. We will come up with interview questions we might ask Willie Wonka while he is in space or interview questions we would ask the space hotel about. We will talk about how illustrations in a book can influence or shape what we think about what we are reading.Week 3Lesson 5Read chapters 13 - 16 before classWe will go over vocabulary words and discuss our study questions for reading comprehension. We will talk about point of view and I will give examples in the story and we will look at how different people from the story might see the same thing but have a different point of view. We will play Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator Jeopardy game.Lesson 6Read chapters 17 - 20 before classWe will go over vocabulary words and discuss our study questions for reading comprehension. We will discuss the themes and symbols of the book. We will play a word scramble game. We will create a movie poster for a movie.

There is part of this book that is not politically correct for this time. We will not be discussing this part of the book nor asking any questions about it. It comprises about three pages of the book. At the time it was copyrighted, in 1972, jokes like this were fair game. In the past few decades, however, people have analyzed pop culture very closely and find this to be insensitive and poking fun at others expense. "Dahl pokes a bit of fun at Russian and Chinese names and accents in a way that would make readers cringe. The Soviet Premier is named Yugetoff. The President threatens him “I'm afraid we're going to have to show you just where you get off, Yugetoff!". The Premier says that the people in the elevator are not Russians, but possibly Chinese. So, the President calls the Head of the Chinese Republic. He is misconnected with a few men named Wing and Wong before finally getting the leader of China, who answers “Gleetings, honorable Mr. Plesident. Here is Assistant-Plemier Chu-On-Dat speaking. How can I do for you?" This book was written decades before political correctness, and it shows."
