Readers will read the novel outside of class following the schedule listed below. During class, the students will receive instruction to create a successful independent reading experience and participate in discussion that encourages critical thinking and introduces literary analysis. Meeting one will introduce the novel and define plot, characterization and theme. Reading strategies will be shared for students to successfully read the assigned chapters learners will read independently before the next session. Homework: Read chapters 1-5. Meeting two will engage students in teacher-led discussion and include a mini lesson related to plot development. Homework: Read chapters 6-10. Meeting three will engage students in teacher-led discussion and include a mini lesson related to characterization. Homework: Read chapters 11-15. Meeting four will engage students in teacher-led discussion and include a mini lesson related to plot and character. Homework: Read chapters 16-20. Meeting five will engage students in teacher-led discussion and include a mini lesson related to plot and character. Homework: Read chapters 21-26. Meeting six will engage students in teacher-led discussion and include a mini lesson related to theme.
