This course offers a unique introductory look at three major scientific studies: osteology (the study of bones), anatomy (the study of bodily structure), and pathology (the study of disease). I am a practicing bioarchaeologist, and wrote my Master's thesis on the subject of paleopathology of Neolithic populations in North Africa. While I primarily work with people from the past at archaeological sites, I have also worked with police departments as a forensic anthropologist to help identify victims of violent crimes, as well as with public health organisations to determine risk and prevention of disease.

The course does require the viewing of images and discussion of subject matter that some may consider disturbing, unpleasant, or graphic. This includes photos or videos of skeletal remains and deceased human bodies in a scientific setting, as well as photos or videos that depict unpleasant physical symptoms of diseases. Also included is discussion of diseases, parasites, human organs and other viscera, as well as discussing how these topics are relevant in a legal setting when addressing forensic anthropology. All of these things are approached respectfully and with a scientific mindset, but students should be prepared. The minimum age limit (11) is a requirement. However, if you have a student close to this age who is interested in the class, please contact me to discuss if the content would be an appropriate fit before enrolling your learner.
