A playable cello with bow.***
For Cello - A rock stop or strap may be needed if you have hardwood floors.
Art tapes (for marking the finger position on the viola)
A tuner or tuning app (I like Pro Guitar Tuner Lite available in App store or Play store)

***If you would like assistance buying or renting an instrument, feel free to email me.  It is imperative that students have an instrument that will not interfere with their ability to learn.  Cheap instruments sold on Amazon can often be difficult to play and will required additional funds to set them up.  Renting is always the best option when you are unsure of instrument quality.  If you must purchase and want to spend as little as possible, I recommend Shar music online.
