Baseball is a game of statistics.  What is a batter's chance of striking out?  What is a team's chance of winning a game?  Which pitcher is most effective against a particular team?  All of these questions can be answered with baseball stats.  We will explore how these stats are determined.  Students will choose current MLB players and track their stats for the three week class.  We will learn how to figure batting averages, ERA, on base percentage and more.  The students will develop problem solving techniques as well as practicing addition, multiplication and division.  Percentages and decimals will also be used.  If the learners play baseball themselves, they will be able to figure out their own stats.  Some time will also be given to discuss major league ballparks with regards to attendance numbers.  The only "homework" will be to look up the weekly stats of the players we are tracking before class time.  If your child is interested in using math in a real world sports situation, this is the class for them.
