  • A student will learn to read and spell using this phonics-based approach. Depending on your child's reading goals, they can stay tutoring for as little or as long as you would like.
  • Note that the levels below DO NOT directly correspond to grade-levels. You can see that concepts such as silent-E are taught later in this sequence than typically would be taught in a school.
  • Some students prefer to just get caught up to grade level while others want to continue with the Barton Reading & Spelling System until the end of Level 10.
  • A description of the content of each level is below: Foundation in Sounds - Auditory Discrimination, Auditory Sequencing, Auditory Memory Level 1 - Phonemic Awareness Level 2 - Consonants and Short Vowels Level 3 - Closed and Unit Syllables
  • Level 4 - Multi-Syllable words and Vowel Teams (a student is a functional reader after this level) Level 5 - Prefixes & Suffixes Level 6 - Six Reasons for Silent-E Level 7 - Vowel-R's
  • Level 8 - Advanced Vowel Teams Level 9 - Influence of Foreign Languages Level 10 - Latin Roots & Greek Combining Forms (a student is able to read & spell at a mid-grade 9 level in the United States after this level)
I am trained at the Associate level in the Orton-Gillingham approach for reading intervention.

I have the following degrees pertaining to education:
-M.Ed. in Special Education
-B.Ed. 
-Post-Graduate Certificate in Special Education

I am a qualified teacher with an active teaching certificate with 15+ years experience teaching. My primary teaching experience has been in the area of Special Education. 
Assessment
빈도: Available upon request
세부 내용: I will begin with a screening assessment to see if a student is ready to start with the Barton Reading & Spelling System. Assessments will be taken after completing each level to ensure a student is ready to move onto the next level. Assessments will be done during tutoring time and act as a review of all previous concepts. Sometimes the assessments take one session, while others they take a few sessions to complete, depending on the level and the amount of review needed.

세부 내용: A certificate of completion will be sent for each completed level. No letter grades will be given. I will give a percentage mark on each category in the post-test, and include a plan for review (if needed), and a plan for the student's next steps.
This class is specifically designed for students with dyslexia.

I have extensive experience teaching with students with other learning diversities including: ADHD, ASD, gifted, low working memory, low RAN, and Auditory Processing Disorder
This class is NOT designed for a student with:
-active seizures (because I cannot guarantee progress)
-Expressive and/or Receptive Language Disorder
-Intellectual Disability (full scale IQ below 70)
-completely new to speaking English

No accounts for external websites are required from students. I will share all screens through the Zoom screen share feature.

I will use the following resources to teach:

1. The Barton Reading & Spelling System is used as a primary resource for this class. Students will use letter tiles to read and spell using my Whizzimo.com registered Barton tutor account. They do not need access to this account as I will share my screen during our Zoom meetings.

2. The Foundation in Sounds program with students who require extra help with auditory processing difficulties. Students will work with sound cards on the virtual.foundationinsounds.com website through my registered Foundation in Sounds tutor account. They do not need access to this account as I will share my screen during our Zoom meetings.

3. David Kilpatrick's book, "Equipped for Reading Success" may be used with students who require additional phonemic awareness practice. I own this teaching resource and can use it with tutoring students while they listen and respond to the auditory drills. You do not need to purchase this resource yourself.

4. Games will take place online through the Zoom platform. I screen share the games during our Zoom meeting. Games take place on: wordwall.net & spellingsuccess.com
