Archaeology is a multi-disciplinary study of the human past. It is one of four sub-fields of anthropology and uses anthropological theory to generate research questions on archaeological data. Join archaeologist Jeremy Freeman in this semester-long class where students will be introduced to the science of archaeology from its beginning to modern methods and technology that are being used in the field. Students will learn how archaeologists identify sites and ultimately collect data from them through excavation. Students will learn spatial and temporal controls and how archaeologist establish chronologies and timeframes for sites. And students will learn how archaeologists identify archaeological cultures and how archaeological data is used to interpret the past. This is a semester long class that will include lectures, labs, and videos. The lectures will take place in a live streaming classroom with the instructor and will consist of Powerpoint presentations and open discussion. Students are strongly encouraged to participate in the lecture discussion. Each class will also contain optional lab activities that relate to each week’s topic. Lab activities will be conducted on your own. Directions for each lab and list of necessary supplies are provided.
